-====Moon Scanning Guide====

-Moons can contain moon minerals and gasses that can be harvested using a POS.  Scanning moons is the process of probing a moon to identify which gasses/minerals it contains (if any).
-
-Moons in 0.3 space and below can contain Moon gasses and minerals.  See the [[Moon Mining]] entry for a more detailed explanation of moon minerals and how to mine them.
-
-Each system can have anywhere from 0 to 150 (or more) moons.  Most systems have between 30 and 70.

-  * Expanded Probe Launcher (NOT a Core Probe Launcher)

-==Fitting Your Ship==
-Moon Surveying used to have to be done in an industrial, but probe volumes were drastically reduced by CCP. Now, any covops cloaking ship makes an excellent prober, with throwaway t1 cruisers and fast-aligning ships also being serviceable.
-
-The only fitting requirement is a Scan Probe Launcher to launch the probes from. Covert ops cloaking ships (covopses, recons) can use the covert ops cloak making them ideal for probing at hostile towers due to their ability to reach full non-MWD speed while cloaked.

-==Moon Probing Basics==
-The instructions below are for probing moons in friendly systems where it is assumed that all POS are friendly. The advanced section will cover how to adjust your method to handle hostile POS.  Try to do your probing in some form of order numerical order, it helps you keep track of what you've scanned so far.
-
-Warp to the Moon you want to scan at 0. On arrival you may not see the moon as moons vary in size and shade (but you will be 5000 km from it). Go to your overview settings and check to show moons. Now simply click the moon on the overview to highlight it.
-
-Aligning to moon: Use the 'Align To...' command.
-
-Fire probe: When you are 100% sure you are aligned and that the probe when launched will hit the moon then launch the probe by clicking the Probe Launcher Module. The probe will shoot out the front of your ship with a whoooosh and head in a straight line towards the moon.
-
-The probe will fly towards the moon and send back any results it fidings. This can take from 5 to 40 minutes depending on which probe you chose to use.  You can have an unlimited number of survey probes in space at once so don't wait for the first one to send back data before moving on to the next moon.
-
-^Probe^Travel Time^Skill_Needed^
-| Quest | 40 minutes | Survey III, Astrometrics III|
-| Discovery | 10 minutes | Survey III, Astrometrics III|
-| Gaze | 5 Minutes | Survey V, Astrometrics V|
-
-
-Once you have launched the probe, open your scanner. It will show a new tab labeled 'Moon Scans' that will fill up as the survey probes reach their target.  Only moons with moon minerals/gasses will appear on scanner.  Empty moons will generate a pop up message saying nothing was found.  Occasionally you will receive a message saying you lost connection with the probe, this means you were not aligned properly and the probe missed the moon.
-
-The results are listed by planet and moon. Clicking one will expand it to show what raw materials can be harvested from that particular moon. Next to the name of the raw material you have the abundance which refers to the batch quantity that could potentially be harvested. Abundances range from 1 to 4.
-
-**WARNING:** If you leave the system, change ship, or dock, your scan results will be lost. You have to stay in the system to receive the results.  Losing your ship, however, will not affect you getting results (tested by Soggy Gravy.)  This is where a cloaking device comes in handy. At the end when you are still waiting for the last few results, warp to a safespot and cloak. By cloaking others looking for you with scan probes will not find you and you can peacefully go afk or jot down the results on paper.

-==Moon Probing in non-Friendly Systems==
-Fly to the planet of the moon you want to scan. Note I said planet and not moon. The reason for this is if you fly directly to a moon, and it happens to have a hostile POS there, you will get destroyed and the owner will get a nice little killmail telling him his POS just killed you. Worse still you don't want to carelessly lose 20 million ISK worth of probes.
-
-So do NOT warp straight to a moon.
-
-When you arrive at the planet (or safespot), open your scanner and do a 360 degree scan at max km range. Sort the results and look carefully down the list. What you are looking for is a Control Tower (make sure you have them set to display on your overview). If you see one on the list then you know one of the moons has a Control Tower, therefore it's likely to have defenses that will gank you if you warp to it.
-
-If you don't find any Control Tower then you may proceed to surveying. If you find a Control Tower you have to then isolate which moon it is at so you can avoid it.
-
-You could do a directional scan on each moon but unless you are really good at space scanning it's probably not a good idea.  If you do insist on scanning the towers down, read the Scouting for POS article.
-
-The best and fastest way to find where the POS is as follows:
-
-  - Create a midspace safespot.
-  - Bookmark the safespot.
-  - Eject from your industrial (Note: When you eject, your skills wont apply for your ships cargo bonus anymore so your probes may be jettisoned in a can next to you).
-  - Warp to each moon at 60km in your pod. POS defenses do not pod people so you are safe, however players do so don't hang around! As soon as you find which moon the POS is at, make a note so you can avoid it.
-  - Warp back to your safespot bookmark and jump back into your industrial.
-
-Due to the lengthy process of moon surveying you should really try to do it when you have no one in the system. Many corporations have big interests in particular systems and moons, and will hunt you down if they find you in there trying to eat their cake.
-
-----
-
-==Advanced Tips==
-
-  *Normal skills to reduce probing time do not apply to survey probes
-
-  *The Covert Ops 10% time reduction skill per level DOES apply to survey probes when fired from a covops.  If you are scanning a large number of moons, it may be better time-wise to use a covops. A covops is also highly recommended when scanning in hostile systems.
-
-----
-
-==Understanding Your Results==
-
-  *About 50% of moons will yield nothing.
-  *About 39% of moons will yield only gases.
-  *The rest will yield some combination of gasses and/or minerals.
