Mumble is an open-source, cross-platform VOIP application. It operates similarly to common closed-source programs TeamSpeak and Ventrilo. At the moment Mumble is one of the best VoIP applications to due to its open licensing, allowing for alliances to run servers that can host several thousand players without financial penalty.

Outside of setting up and using the right push to talk keys, there is some other etiquette to keep in mind. Following some of the basic etiquette on Mumble will go a long ways towards making fellow Testies not hate you.

If you are deaf, Please let the FC know, or just let people in fleet chat know, so that they can relay orders from Mumble to fleet chat for you. We are committed to making sure you can have a good time and join us in pew-pewing, but if the FC does not know that there is a deaf player in fleet there may not be anyone relaying orders, so don't be afraid to pipe up and let them know!

To get registered and working on TEST Mumble you need to have a valid and working Auth account, with an API key flagged as “OK” and some groups assigned to you. If you have not done that yet, go here first: https://wiki.pleaseignore.com/it:auth . If API keys are not flagged, try refreshing your API key.

While you're logged into auth, on the “Your Profile” page, click the “Add Service” button at the bottom.
Select “Mumble (Minder2)” as the service to add, and enter a password. Then click “Add Service”.
Download and install Mumble (the latest stable release is recommended. If you're on Debian apt-get install mumble). https://wiki.mumble.info/wiki/Main_Page#Download_Mumble Step through the setup wizard and create a certificate (the defaults are fine). At the end of the Minder2 setup you were given a link called the “Service URL”.
This link will also show up in the “Your Profile” page next to the “Mumble (Minder2)” service. Clicking this link will take you to the Minder service page.
Here are the currently available servers available to TEST pilots. Click on “Connect” for the “Main Server” mumble service. Your browser will likely ask you if you'd like to launch Mumble (even if it's already open); click to open Mumble.

This is expected on the first time you connect to a server; click yes to accept that servers certificate. Remember that mumble servers will be taken down and brought up as needed so even if you are joining a fleet that has used a mumble server called “bobs fleet” in the past you may need to do this again. The next window is asking for the password you provided when you signed up for the Minder2 service.

You will then be logged into the TEST Mumble Server. We recommend you bookmark the Main Server so you can join directly from the Mumble client rather than through the web service.

Our old two-layer architecture for Mumble fleet channels (fleet commanders and pilots) has served us well for a long time. However, it is now time for a change. By splitting fleets into three layers (fleet commanders, wing commanders and pilots) we hope to make it easier to reach the right people and reduce the noise from people in other roles that you don't want to hear. Sounds good right? Yeah, I thought so. There's only one problem: You'll need to make some slight changes to your Mumble hotkeys.

We're have increased the total number of keys to four. If you're not an FC, you will have up to three of these. The new keys are as follows:

• Local key: Same as the old whisper key (which people also called the local key). It speaks to your subchannel only and it perfect for unimportant shit.
• Fleet key: This key will speak to the entire fleet. Use it with care and don't use it to talk about things that are not important.
• Speak-upward key: This will speak to your direct superior and any of their direct subordinates. In other words, if you're a mainline DPS pilot, this key will speak to the DPS wing commander and any other DPS pilots. Use with discretion.
• Speak-downward key: For FCs only. This will speak only to your direct subordinates.

You can wipe your current push to talk key and whisper key. For all other parts of Mumble these keys can be replaced with your Speak-upward and Local keys respectively.

Note: You no longer need to have a push to talk key (red lips)

Pilots…

• Use your local key to speak to your current sub, the people around you, but not the FC.
• As a mainline DPS pilot, use your fleet key to speak to the entire fleet (generally referred to as Global key). Pilots should use this key to reply to the DPS FC.
• As a specialised wing pilot (logi, tackle, capital, etc use your speak-upward key to speak to your Wing FC and any other pilots in your wing. (reply to questions, scouting etc).

If you are a Main DPS FC…

• Use your speak-upward key for command comms at all times; this includes all other FCs and Wing FCs.
• Use your fleet key to talk to the entire fleet, including Wing FCs.
• Don't use your speak-downward key. (If DPS FCs use their speak down key, none of the other Wing FCs will be able to hear what is going on)

If you are a Wing FC…

Wing FCs are pilots coordinating specialized wings i.e. Logistics Command, or Tackle, or Capitals, etc.

• Use your speak-upward key for command comms; this includes all other FCs and Wing FCs.
• Use your fleet key to speak to the entire fleet. (generally referred to as Global key)
• Use your speak-downward key to speak to everyone in your specialized wing.
• Use your local key to speak only to other wing commanders immediately next to you, in the same wing.
